The Board's Mental Retardation Unit provides an array of services to meet the needs of infants and toddlers who have special needs. Services are also provided to assist children, adults, and family members who experience mental retardation within their families.
Case Management Services provide assistance to
individuals with mental retardation and their families
by advocating on their behalf, identifying needs, developing
individual services plans, coordinating services and
monitoring services. Case managers complete annual assessments,
link clients to services, make home and on-site visits
to programs and coordinate and facilitate team reviews.
For details please call 547-8902.
Respite Services provide temporary relief for
families from their care giving responsibilities in the
form of small financial grants. Relief may be arranged
to give families the opportunity to pursue social outlets
or when an emergency arises. Services are provided to
persons of all ages.
Please contact 547-8902 for details.
Chesapeake Family Care Program Services provides
family oriented living arrangements for adults with mental
retardation who would best benefit from an opportunity
to live in a family setting and participate in homes
and community life. The Family Support Specialist provides
training for family care providers, screening and placing
clients in DSS certified homes, and helping providers
implement individual service plans designed to increase
client capabilities in independent living skills, self-care/health
maintenance, recreation and leisure skills.
This unit
can be reached at 547-8902.
Infant Intervention Services offers interdisciplinary
assessments, home and center based therapeutic and education
services, specialized therapy consultation, family and

The Mental Retardation Residential Program Services
- Supported Living Program utilizes approved vendors
to provide drop in services and focuses on independent
living and community integration. This program currently
serves individuals who function in the mild to moderate
range of mental retardation. Support is provided according
to the individual participant's needs. The Supported
Living Program is designed to enable participants to
function as independently as possible and to maximize
their ability to become integral members of the community.
This unit can be reached at 547-8902.
The Mental Retardation Unit directly operates the Community
Options Program, a day support program licensed
by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation
and Substance Abuse Services for adults who have severe
to profound mental retardation and other complex disabilities.
These services, while provided in a center-based setting,
also include training and providing community based
experiences which they can enjoy. This also enables
them to learn about opportunities in our community.
This program concentrates on using structured person-centered
training approaches and some pre-vocational activities.
For information call the Chesapeake Vocational Services
Coordinator at 523-1088.
The Mental Retardation Unit contracts Vocational Services with one or
more local providers to provide several vocational habilitation options for
individuals with mental retardation. These services are provided by an employment
service organization that holds a certification with the Department of Rehabilitation
Services. These services are provided in a sheltered setting or in integrated
environments. Individuals who work in either are paid for the work they produce
by either the contractor or by their employer. All individuals accepted into
the vocational program will work with a team to develop their individual service
plan which guides the training and services they receive.
For more information,
please contact the Chesapeake Vocational Services Coordinator at 523-1088.
The Chesapeake Assistance Trust enables families
to provide resources for their disabled family member
to ensure that their loved one's needs are met in the
years ahead. Families are often concerned about the future
of their loved one when they are no longer available
to provide support and funds for their needs. This program
provides an affordable way for families to provide for
this. Chesapeake Assistance Trust Video
