The Board's Mental Retardation Unit provides an array of services to meet the needs of infants and toddlers who have special needs. Services are also provided to assist children, adults, and family members who experience mental retardation within their families.

Case Management Services provide assistance to individuals with mental retardation and their families by advocating on their behalf, identifying needs, developing individual services plans, coordinating services and monitoring services. Case managers complete annual assessments, link clients to services, make home and on-site visits to programs and coordinate and facilitate team reviews.

Respite Services provide temporary relief for families from their care giving responsibilities in the form of small financial grants. Relief may be arranged to give families the opportunity to pursue social outlets or when an emergency arises. Services are provided to persons of all ages.

Chesapeake Family Care Program Services provides family oriented living arrangements for adults with mental retardation who would best benefit from an opportunity to live in a family setting and participate in homes and community life. The Family Support Specialist provides training for family care providers, screening and placing clients in DSS certified homes, and helping providers implement individual service plans designed to increase client capabilities in independent living skills, self-care/health maintenance, recreation and leisure skills.

Infant Intervention Services offers interdisciplinary assessments, home and center based therapeutic and education services, specialized therapy consultation, family and pediatric consultant services, and supportive services for infants with developmental problems birth through two years of age and their families. The Mental Retardation Residential Program Services - Supported Living Program utilizes approved vendors to provide drop in services and focuses on independent living and community integration. This program currently serves individuals who function in the mild to moderate range of mental retardation. Support is provided according to the individual participant's needs. The Supported Living Program is designed to enable participants to function as independently as possible and to maximize their ability to become integral members of the community.

The Mental Retardation Unit directly operates the Community Options Program, a day support program licensed by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services for adults who have severe to profound mental retardation and other complex disabilities. These services, while provided in a center-based setting, also include training and providing community based experiences which they can enjoy. This also enables them to learn about opportunities in our community. This program concentrates on using structured person-centered training approaches and some pre-vocational activities.

A teacher works with a Vocational Services student - photographThe Mental Retardation Unit contracts Vocational Services with one or more local providers to provide several vocational habilitation options for individuals with mental retardation. These services are provided by an employment service organization that holds a certification with the Department of Rehabilitation Services. These services are provided in a sheltered setting or in integrated environments. Individuals who work in either are paid for the work they produce by either the contractor or by their employer. All individuals accepted into the vocational program will work with a team to develop their individual service plan which guides the training and services they receive.

The Chesapeake Assistance Trust enables families to provide resources for their disabled family member to ensure that their loved one's needs are met in the years ahead. Families are often concerned about the future of their loved one when they are no longer available to provide support and funds for their needs.
