The Chesapeake Community Services Board's Substance Abuse program provides a variety of assessment, treatment and prevention services to the citizens of Chesapeake. Services are provided at the main and Broadlawn offices.
Adult Outpatient Counseling is provided to persons 18 and up that can benefit from attending treatment services on an outpatient basis. Assessments are offered to assist in determining treatment needs. Individual, group and family counseling is also offered, as well as urinalysis. For more information please call (757) 547-9334.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for individuals that require more treatment support to address their substance abuse problems. In this program, clients meet for group therapy three times per week and also seek their primary counselor weekly. IOP is for adults ages 18 and up. There are women's and mixed (co-ed) programs. Call (757) 547-9334.
Adolescent Outpatient Counseling is provided at two locations, Great Bridge and Broadlawn in South Norfolk. Both programs serve teens and young adults with treatment services appropriate to their developmental needs. There are groups for parents as well. At the Broadlawn program, called A Step Higher, there are special services including a mentoring program, culturally appropriate treatment and transportation to appointments. This program also serves adults. A Step Higher may be reached directly at (757) 494-0817 or (757) 494-0835.
Contract and Referral Services are available for adults that require detoxification, inpatient care, halfway house placements and methadone services. There are also limited resources for adolescent inpatient care.
Crisis Intervention and Emergency Services are available for persons with substance abuse issues. For emergency assistance only, please call 548-7000.
Family and Friends Program is an educational and support program for family and friends of someone with an addiction or substance use disorder. For more information, please call Nora Hamel at (757) 819-6142.
Prevention Services are offered through the division's annual prevention plan.
Examples include:
Girl Power a support, recreation and community service program for adolescent girls. Through weekly meetings, activities, field trips and projects teens find alternatives to becoming involved in drug abuse. The program is available for students at Oscar Smith Middle School. For more information, please call 547-3336.

CCOYS Assessment and Planning Committee is a group of citizens and agency representatives that advises the Community Services Board on the needs for substance abuse prevention activities and programs in the city. This is the local prevention coalition in Chesapeake. For further information call Muriel Evans at (757) 819-6141.
Parent Consultation Program, a one-to-one tutoring service for parents that desire to improve their parenting skills.
Early Intervention Program, an educational service for youth that have not yet developed a problem with substance abuse.
What do our youth need to be healthy, caring, and responsible? The Search Institute has conducted the survey Search Institute Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors with thousands of young people across the country. Visit the Search Institute web site to view the assets that young people need.
